It’s not every day that you decide to get new furniture made; so chances are high that you don’t already have references for a reliable, neat and affordable wood contractor. But, when you start an internet search, it can feel daunting to identify a good carpenter from an inexperienced one. There are plenty of good tradesmen out there that take pride in their work, do a great job and will tidy up their mess before they leave. However, you should follow these tips to be able to find the right wood contractor with a well-trained professional team.

Given below is a simple guide that will help you find the right wood contractor who can handle new furniture, wooden flooring, wooden staircases and cabinetry work that is beautiful, impeccably finished and lasts a lifetime. Take a look:-

1. Always start with references
Call a few colleagues, especially those whose design and work standard you highly admire and ask for references. It’s good to get firsthand knowledge of their skills, reliability, team size, budgeting etc. Avoid anyone who comes knocking on the construction site touting for work. In fact, as a professional, several contractors will call on your office looking for work and its best to ask them to provide references so you can make an informed decision about their standard of service.

2. Develop a working relationship with reliable wood contractors
The best form of marketing is the word of mouth. When someone does a good job for a colleague, ask for contact details and meet with the contractor. It's quite likely that you'd need his services someday, so it’s best to develop a working relationship with reputable, reliable and trustworthy contractors right away.

Don’t start looking for one only once a project starts, as that could mean delays. Collect portfolios for all contractors that you meet with and keep a database. This way, when you need a wood contractor for a particular project, you can pick the best match depending on each contractor’s area of expertise.

3. Compare quotes
The more quotes you can get the better, which is why you should always consider at least 3-4 contractors for a job. Make sure that when you clearly describe/ outline the work you need to have carried out and provide as many details as possible. Find out how the contractor charges. It is not a good idea to pay the full amount for a job up front. A small deposit is acceptable if there is a large outlay for materials before they can start your work, but never pay for the whole job before any work has started. Also, make sure you get a receipt for payments made, before, during or after the job is done.

4. Insist on a contract
Whilst we all like to put our trust in people, verbal contracts are a disaster waiting to happen. By agreeing and confirming everything in writing, both sides know exactly what is expected of them. A reliable tradesman with good intentions will happily sign a contract with you, outlining everything included in a fixed price or daily rate.
