Want to add depth, character and intrigue to the decor of a room? Good interior design is not just about picking out the best pieces and accessories; it is also about using them in the right creative way to bring out the best in any space. There is a little hidden secret to decorating even with basic elements that will result in more than just a collection of pretty things – Creating Layers.

Combining different layers is what makes a space interesting, no matter what your personal style of decorating may be. Whether layers increase your physical comfort, please the eye, or hide parts of a room that make you cringe, there are tons of reasons to go multi-dimensional. The result doesn’t have to be busy or jarring, so don’t worry if bold colours and fussy pattern are not your style.

Here are 5 ways to use layers to add depth and interest to any space.

     1. Create Multiple Layers Of A Colour For Cohesiveness
Choose a neutral colour that best appeals to you, and then layer it in a variety of shades, textures and finishes. The final result is always gloriously sophisticated. In this beautiful living room, a mélange of gray tones create a look that is calm and coordinated, but also full of detail, texture and warmth.

     2. Layer Textures For Added Interest
When a room lacks layers of variation in texture, it can fall flat and feel one dimensional even if your home is filled with the most expensive accessories. The key to a beautifully warm and comfortable home is adding layers of texture in every room. You can vary the colours and patterns as you add texture.

    3. Layer Cushions & Pillows For Cosiness
Carefully choose drapery, area rugs, pillows and throws made of rich fabrics, patterns and prints that will add a pop of colour to the space and give a warm and inviting feeling. These add depth to any piece of furniture, and creating cohesive or contrasting layers is very easy simply by switching out covers. Add a few throw rugs to help cover up less-than-luxurious carpeting. Layer your bedding with multiple blankets and throw pillows add depth while keeping you warm and cosy.

     4. Layer The Wall Art
One thing that small spaces lack is depth, since there is only so much space for the eye to take in. Luckily, you can make up that depth easily by layering in your design. To add depth to wall art, use shadow boxes. Shadow boxes make excellent wall hangings for custom art and can also be used for small storage too.

     5. Layers Of Lighting To Set The Mood
Create layers of lighting to create interest, intrigue and variety. In a room where everything is lit evenly, nothing stands out. Pick a focal point and perhaps a secondary focal point and highlight those. Add general ambient lighting and some lower lighting, like table lamps, for interest.
