Reap What You Sow!

The beauty of India's diverse landscape and rich pastoral heritage has long been reflected in India's furniture. From Kashmir to Kanyakumari, you will find recurring motifs in the land's furniture that reflect our agricultural and rural culture. These charming elements keep making their way back into our homes, in one medium or the other! Here are a few Indian motifs that you may have noticed before… and that will make you fall in love with Indian traditional furniture all over again!

  • The Kashmiri Chinar

Chinar trees dominate not only the physical, but also the art landscape of Kashmir! You will find the leaves of this beautiful tree reflected in everything from the buildings to the furniture of this gorgeous state. You can bring home a flavour of Kashmiri craftsmanship through carved wooden tables, inscribed silver tableware and wall hangings, all of which reflect the same lovely motif. The intricate detailing, especially when accented by hints of glittering brass in wood, will add oodles of charm to your living space!

  • Lotus

The beauty of the Lotus, the national flower of India, has long been recognised by artisans across the length and breadth of the country. You can find mirrors, headrests, frames and tables with carvings of lotus petals decorating the surface. This is a motif that will make any piece of furniture stand out as being distinctly Indian, no matter what part of the world you put it in!

  • Chakki

More than the design, the charming traditionality of this piece is in its shape. Chakki footstools are making their way back into Indian homes. Not only as footstools, these pieces are also being used as low chairs, side tables and even serving trays! This is an excellent way to introduce a royal touch to your home decor without overpowering the space.

  • Birds

From peacocks and ducks to cuckoo birds, these denizens of the skies have made an indispensable place for themselves in traditional Indian furniture. If you want to add a bit of a personal touch to your otherwise minimalistic, white-washed home, you can do so by adding in a wooden piece with interesting carvings of birds – anything from room screens and wall hangings and even mandirs! When choosing, you could consider brass highlights in the wood for your mandir decor. Watch it redefine your space!

  • Elephant

The elephant motif is almost synonymous with Indian decoration across the globe! You cannot look far into Indian traditional furnishings without bumping into a beautiful elephant-themed table, ottoman or footstool. The excellent detailing and craftsmanship that goes into these pieces means that it’s only a matter of time before you bring one of these pieces home!

Now that you have all the ideas for your home's traditional makeover, the only thing left to do is get going! Simply call up your local contractor and order an upgrade for an existing table or headrest. The ideas are endless and so are the themes, and the ways in which you can make your home more Indian, and artsier, are practically infinite!
