Space-saving Ideas for a Shared Kids’ Room
Space is a constraint in many city homes today, pushing you to get creative with furniture and home décor! We know it can be challenging, especially when you have to create a shared setup for your children within a single room. Here are a few ideas to get started.
- Bunk Beds
Two children and not enough floor space for two cots? Leverage the vertical with a bunk bed! Remove the ceiling fan (for [obvious] safety reasons), and add individual wall fans and reading lights. Pro-tip: Give them individual control over their own light and fan, and effectively eliminate half the fights between siblings!
- Fold-down or Murphy Study Desks
Ideally, we would all prefer a solid wood study table – but a polished wooden plank attached to the wall, on hinges, works fine too! There are a number of ways to do this, so look at pictures online and get your local contractor on the job. Simply pull it up and latch it in place to study and easily fold it down when done! Add foldable, height-adjustable chairs and voilà, you’re done!
- Curtain Room Dividers
Let’s face it; there are times when siblings get along and times when they really don’t! Add a curtain rod running down the middle of the room. The curtains can be drawn to divide the room into two or even three mini-rooms.
- Storage Solutions
- Under-the-bed Storage
All toys, clothes and other essentials can go into the box of the bed. For child-friendly usage, opt for drawer-type storage that will require no lifting of the mattress.
- Under-the-stairs Storage
If you choose a bunk bed with stairs, it will occupy more space than a bunk bed with a ladder. Use the extra space well, with storage drawers in every step!
- Floating Shelves
Save floor space but still add more shelves for books and other school essentials with floating, wall-mount shelves, preferably just above study desks.
